3 Potential Risks of Egg Retrieval
3 Potential Risks of Egg Retrieval
On the day of your egg retrieval procedure, Dr. Randy S. Morris will use a vaginal ultrasound to guide the insertion of a long, thin device through your vagina to the ovary. When the ovary is located, each follicle is pierced to retrieve the egg. The procedure is performed while you are under anesthesia. You should plan on resting after the egg retrieval procedure, however, the following day you will be able to resume your normal daily activities.
The Egg Retrieval Procedure
- After your cycle has been regulated, you will undergo a series of hormone medication injections to stimulate the growth of multiple eggs
- The development of your egg follicles are monitored with regular blood level hormone measurements and pelvic ultrasounds
- When the Doctor determines your egg follicles have reached a prime stage of maturity, ovulation will be induced via hCG injection administration
- Your eggs are surgically retrieved by the Doctor using a transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration tool while you are under general anesthesia
Potential Risks of Egg Retrieval
- Mild to moderate pelvic and abdominal pain
- Rare injury to organs near the ovaries, such as the bladder, bowel, or blood vessels
- Rare pelvic infection
To decrease the risks of egg retrieval surgery, you will be prescribed a series of medications post-egg retrieval procedure. Further, you will be advised to refrain from some basic lifestyle choices.
- Antibiotic to prevent infection
- Hormonal supplements to prepare your endometrial lining – progesterone-injections and/or progesterone vaginal suppositories
- Refrain from sexual intercourse
- Avoid baths or submerging yourself in water – especially hot tubs
- Do not use tampons for post-retrieval bleeding
