Up to three or more IUI cycle attempts may be necessary for a patient to achieve the maximum benefits of the treatment. Despite potential negative impacts upon his IUI success rates, Dr. Morris encourages up to three IUI cycle attempts for all patients before moving on to more aggressive and expensive treatment therapies, such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

‍IUI Procedure

‍IUI is commonly prescribed as a first treatment option for women who have been unable to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. Candidates for IUI treatment typically recommended for women having:

• Unobstructed fallopian tubes
• A normal uterine cavity
• A male partner with a low sperm count or other sperm deficiencies.

At the beginning of her monthly cycle, the patient is administered a regimen of fertility medications to stimulate the growth of multiple egg follicles. The fertility medication regimen can consist of an oral medication (Clomid), alone, or Clomid in combination with a low dose of Gonadotropin (FSH/LH) injections during her cycle to stimulate egg growth. When the woman’s eggs have reached a prime stage of growth and maturity, she is administered a one-time injectable medication to trigger ovulation (hCG). Within the next 36 hours, a highly concentrated amount of sperm is inserted into the woman’s uterus via a catheter. The procedure is similar to that of a Pap smear and does not require anesthesia.
