What Fertility Injections Are Used During Egg Freezing?
Fertility Injections
During a standard In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedure, the woman’s eggs are matured inside her body using high dose ovarian stimulation fertility medications administered via injection.IVF is also commonly performed through:
- Natural IVF – with no ovarian stimulation injectable medications, or
- Minimal Stimulation IVF – low dose ovarian stimulation injectable medications
Regardless of the dosage of fertility medications used through IVF, a woman’s eggs must be mature in order to be successfully fertilized by sperm. Mature eggs are able to be frozen for later thawing, fertilization, and transfer into the woman’s uterus.
In Vitro Maturation (IVM) Used During Egg Freezing
Immature eggs may also be frozen and matured through in vitro egg maturation (IVF). IVM is a practice perfected by leading IVF doctor, Dr. Randy Morris, founder and medical director of celebrated fertility clinic, IVF1, located in the Naperville Fertility Center. IVM is a revolutionary technique used in conjunction with IVF when a woman’s eggs are going to be frozen for later fertilization and transfer into her uterus. After a patient’s immature eggs have been frozen, Dr. Morris will bring them to maturity in vitro in IVF1’s state-of-the-art laboratory. Once the eggs are in a mature stage, they will be fertilized via Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). ICSI is a preferred method of fertilizing an egg by injecting one single sperm cell into the matured egg. When a high quality embryo has developed after fertilization, it will be transferred to the woman’s uterus for hopeful implantation into her uterine lining and development into a fetus.
Fertility Injections in Conjunction with Egg Freezing
Through blood level hormone testing and pelvic ultrasounds, Dr. Randy Morris will determine when the patient’s eggs have reached a prime stage of development for freezing before maturity. Then, ovulation will be triggered via hCG injection and the eggs will be surgically retrieved and frozen. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is an injection medication used to induce – trigger – ovualation. U.S. brand names for hCG include: Profasi, Pregnyl, Novarel, and generic.
Leading IVM Provider
IVM – the technique of maturing eggs after they have been frozen – is offered as a standard practice of care by Dr. Randy Morris. IVM is less expensive than standard IVF because fertility injection expenses are reduced. IVM is typically recommended for women:
- Women who do not want to use fertility medications
- Women who need or want to avoid fertility drugs because of the risk of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
- Women suffering from premature ovarian aging
