Is IVF the Most Effective Fertility Treatment?
Is IVF the Most Effective Fertility Treatment?
IVF is a highly-advanced Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) medical procedure that has been scientifically researched and developed to help couples who are grappling with infertility have a baby.
- The IVF cycle begins with a course of hormone therapy injections to stimulate the growth of multiplefollicles in the woman’s ovaries.
- These follicles are retrieved surgically as eggs and are then fertilized with the selected male’s sperm within test tubes (in vitro), creating several embryos.
- An agreed-to-number of quality grade embryos are then transferred via insemination into the woman’s uterus – hopefully resulting in implantation and the development of a fetus – achieving a full term pregnancy.
Candidates Benefiting From IVF Fertility
- A woman in her advanced maternal age – typically, over 30 years of age
- A woman who has blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- A woman suffering from endometriosis
- A woman who has premature ovarian failure or uterine fibroids
- A woman who has had her Fallopian tubes surgically removed
- Male factor infertility, including blockage, decreased sperm count, or poor motility
- Unexplained infertility
ICSI – Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
This is the process of injecting a single sperm directly into the egg in order to achieve fertilization.
- The fertilized eggs are then closely monitored to ensure that cell division is taking place – that they are developing into embryos.
- After having grown over a 3 to 5 day period into a quality stage, the fertilized eggs are medically deemed to be embryos.
Embryo Transfer Process
Within 3 to 5 days, one or more of the resulting embryos will be transferred into the woman’s uterus by way of a catheter (small tube).
- This transfer procedure is usually painless for most women, although mild cramping similar to menstrual cycle cramps may be experienced.
- After being transferred, the embryos will attach to the woman’s uterus and, hopefully, a baby will be born!
