Fresh vs. Frozen Embryo Transfers
Fresh vs. Frozen Embryo Transfers
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment entails five traditional steps.
- Egg follicle stimulation
- Egg retrieval
- Fertilization through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection ICSI into the eggs
- Embryo culture and grading of quality embryos
- Embryo transfer
Frozen Embryo Transfers
The fifth stage in the traditional In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)cycle process, entails transferring one or more embryo into the intended mother’s.
- Fresh Embryo Transfer
- Frozen Embryo Transfers (FET)
Frozen Embryo Transfers (FET)
When an IVF cycle results in more embryos than can be safely transferred during a fresh embryo transfer, couples can choose to preserve their additional embryos through embryo cryopreservation.Cryopreserved embryos can be thawed and transferred at any time in the future. Frozen embryos can also be transferred to a gestational carrier’s uterus. The best benefit of FET is that a woman does not have to undergo the physical and financial strain of a subsequent fresh IVF cycle to produce embryos for future use in family planning.
- After fertilization, additional embryos are frozen for preservation within one to six days.
- Before freezing, the embryos are mixed with a solution preventing crystallization within the developed cells and securing preservation.
- The embryos are then placed in plastic vials and are secured in liquid nitrogen freezers.
FET is the process of:
- Thawing the frozen embryos,
- Bathing them in a solution to remove the anti-crystallization solution,
- Transferring one or more of the embryos into a woman’s uterus – or, into a gestational carrier’s uterus – for hopeful implantation, and
- A healthy, full term baby is born.
